Shenmue 3

Shenmue III is real, folks. Director Yu Suzuki and his team at Ys Net have wrapped up the most successful video game campaign in Kickstarter’s history, pulling in an astonishing $6,333,295 for development.

Now comes the waiting game. How many Kickstarter delays is this one going to be hit with?

Actually, despite is record breaking figure, Shenmue III came up $4 million shy of the $10 million Suzuki was hoping for in order to make it a “true open-world” game. I’m not heartbroken though. We have plenty of open world games, and I think I would prefer something a bit more restrained like the other Shenmue games or the Yakuza games. No need to be too large.

Shenmue III nabbed the record for the largest Kickstarter video game from Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, which pulled in a respectable $5,545,991 last month. Either way, I’m so glad both have proven to be such a success. Shenmue III ran into criticisms, but with such a trailblazing effort from large companies involved, that was inevitable.

Whatever it takes, right? Can’t argue with the results. We’re going to be playing Shenmue III! It’s just a matter of when.
